LaSuria Kandi Allman interviews Entrepreneur Jennifer Carrington
Jennifer 'Jenny K.'Carrington was
born in East Meadow Long Island on August 17th 1982 to Sherry
Carrington and James Carrington. She lived in Massapequa until she was 9
years old and then moved to Amityville. Jennie was an only child and by
the time she was 3 she started to ask about having a brother or
sister. After she was born the doctor had told her parents that they
would never be able to conceive a child again. So they began to look
into adoption.
There was a slew of foster children that came in and out
of the house that Jennifer really embraced as her own siblings and
Jennifer's parents really embraced being foster parents so much so that
at one point there were seven children in one house! When Jennie was
four her parents made an appointment at St. Christopher's Adoption
Agency which is now Little Flower, and that day she met Octavia and
Donna who were half sisters. It was as if they'd known each other their
entire lives. And so Mr. and Mrs. Carrington started the procedure to
adopt the girls.
In 1987 the Carrington family joined the New Hope
institutional Baptist Church at 30 Harrison Avenue in Amityville, the
girls doing the Little Voices Choir, which was the Children's choir,at
the church and this is where Jennifer fell in love with music. In second
grade Jennifer joined the chorus and Octavia joined the chorus in her
school. Even though Octavia was older than Jen by three years they had
the same chorus teacher Mrs Barbara Jordan. Both of the sisters voices
and their dedication to music caught her attention and she invited them
to join her show chorus outside of school.
Jennifer and Octavia traveled
with the chorus and perform alongside the New York Philharmonic. At
home Jennifer's parents played everything from Chi-Lites the stylistics
the temptations Luther Vandross Barry White Ashford and Simpson Billy
Joel Bruce Springsteen William Estefan and so she was influenced by many
different genres of music. It was Octavia who introduced her to hip hop
KRS One Salt N Pepa Kidas time went on Jennifer moves from a little
voices choir into the Young Adult choir and also the Combined Choir at
her church. She realized at an early age that she wanted to go into music
professionally. Jennifer formed her first girl-group when she was in
Jr. High. Envision consisted of Jennifer, her sister Donna, and her best
friend Venus Person.
