Today, In the Hot Seat, we meet Celebrity Dame: The Rap Critic Who is Reinventing the Carolina Indie Scene.

Born in Durham, North Carolina, raised in Rocky Mount, Celebrity Dame became an advocate for hip hop at an early age.

He first fell in love with hip hop after hearing Little Brother’s record “Light It Up” for the first time at 14 after moving to Raleigh, North Carolina. Influenced by 9th Wonder, Ski Beatz, J. Manifest, Phonte, Big Pooh, and other legendary NC icons, Dame decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

After years of hits and misses, he finally found his true passion, writing, film, and teaching. He is currently co-founder and blogger for the most popular hip hop website in the Carolinas PoundsofSound.com .

For years Dame noticed how the Carolina indie scene was suffering from countless dry-spells, in which there has been a limited amount of deals cut, underexposure, a lack of quality, and ineffective processes. While others in the game went on and ignored these issues, Celebrity Dame saw this as a major problem in Carolina and came to the rescue. Some hate him, while others love him. However, Celebrity Dame is a MAJOR key in the resurrection of the North Carolina hip hop market. He has continually used his blog to not only educate artists, but to also give exposure and light to the musicians who deserve a shot.
His ear for music and his brutal honesty has become a fan favorite. This lead him to the creation of his web series Pound or Drown in which he pounds (likes), or drowns (hates) artists who submits their music to him for review. His series quickly gained the attention of the masses of hip hop heads and has moved to 10, 000 viewers per episode in what seems to be overnight. Dame says he will continue to critique and dismiss all wack music until there is no weak music left.
